Subject How do I order a static IP for my website?
Author HelpDesk Staff

If you require an SSL certificate or anonymous FTP access for your website, then it is necessary to switch your hosting plan to use a static IP address.

A static IP address (also knows as a "dedicated" or "unique" IP address) is necessary for an SSL certificate (or anonymous FTP access) to work correctly, because your website must be "bound" to a unique IP address that is different then anything else on your web server.

NOTE: There is a small monthly charge for a static IP address.

HOW TO ORDER A STATIC IP ADDRESS

  1. Log into your ET Web Hosting account. (http://my.etwebhosting.com)
  2. Click the Hosting Plans link under the My Services section of the left navigation area. This will list all the web hosting plans you have with us.
  3. Now click the "A" icon for the desired domain name / hosting plan. This will bring you to the page where you can order "add-ons" for your hosting plan.
  4. Click the Order Now link for the add-on called "1 Dedicated IP Address".
  5. Complete the order process, and your account will be switched to a static IP address once payment is confirmed.

Please note that changing your website's IP address could render the website to be unreachable for a few hours for some people. It does not happen all the time, but you should be aware of such an issue before requesting a change of the websites IP. (The reason for this is due to "DNS caching". Some DNS servers will have the old IP address stored in their memory, and it takes about 0-4 hours for all DNS servers around the internet to be updated with the new IP address information.)
